Our icebreaker for a meeting yesterday was "Where is your happy place?" The answers were interesting and ranged from very specific places to very general places, like any beach in the world. So where is your happy place?
Plus the usual.
Bonus: Today is National Taco Day. How are you celebrating?
The back deck in the evening with a book and a beer.
In the woods on the trail with the Lady.
Snuggling up in bed on a cold winter morning.
The golf course when I am hitting it solid and straight.
Still no running here. Foot is getting better. Earlier this week it was so swollen it looked like I had recently finished a 100 miler. Maybe this weekend or next week I can get back to running.
I did not know it was national taco day and have nothing planned. I did have taco yesterday at the corporate office on of my rare visits down there. They were somewhat disappointing. Maybe I should make up for that tonight.
2018-10-04 7:17 PM
Hope the foot gets better. The happy places were sounding good until golf. I don't know why but golf never clicked for me lol...
Since everyone was giving generic answers to the question in my meeting yesterday (75% of the people said "the beach"), I said that my happy place was while I was out running. That even though sometimes it sucks, I am always happy that I'm there. Maybe that's cheesy, but it's true.
Last night I ran 3 miles on my normal 3-mile route. This morning I ran 3 miles on my normal 3-mile route, but backwards.
Beautiful morning, mid-50s, starts still out, then I saw the sunrise while walking the dog.
I am celebrating National Taco Day by making tacos!!! While wearing a taco shirt!
When last week(?) you posted about doing a route backwards, I then did a route backwards......it seemed longer and I hated it!
2018-10-04 12:27 PM
I'll have to try that sometime - wonder how it will feel?
2018-10-04 12:27 PM
Oooh, stars and then the sunrise - how lovely!
As soon as I stepped out the door, it was completely dark and I just took a moment to look up at the sky at the stars. Then as my run progressed, it started getting lighter in the east, and at one point when I was making a turn I took a moment to look across the entire sky from the light in the east back to the dark and the stars in the west. It was pretty magical.
2018-10-04 12:41 PM
mid 50's - man I can't wait for that! you're so lucky
I thought of you yesterday on my long run. I did 2xnormal loop, but did the second one in reverse! So so crazy!
2018-10-04 2:59 PM
We sometimes run our lake route backward on Sundays to avoid a 1.5-mi stretch of busy road. It's funny to notice things I don't normally see when running in the usual direction!
10 miles in the stank this morning.....very sick of mid-70s and high humidity before dawn.
No boxing tonight as I have a work thing.
My happy place is when I am with my husband and two kids and we are doing something together......sharing a meal, playing cards, or even just watching TV or a movie. The location of where this takes place is irrelevant. We have not all been together for six weeks and will likely not occur again until the week of Thanksgiving. That said, both kids will be home this weekend for the first time since they for school, but one will have her posse with her as they are all going to Taylor Swift and just using our house a hotel for a night. The other will be home most of the weekend.
Bonus: I guess I will go get tacos!
2018-10-04 11:27 AM
You will find that the occasions when you have everyone together will get rarer and rarer, but that makes them even more special.
2018-10-04 11:32 AM
Last two North American dates for Taylor Swift! We saw the show 2x in one week last summer (in the rain in New Jersey on Saturday and on a beautiful night in Massachusetts the following Thursday).
girl I feel your pain!
Enjoy seeing your kids this weekend
2018-10-04 12:26 PM
My DD is 17 and I know the days with her at home are numbered - even though she'll likely stay at home for university. I will really miss her she she goes.
2018-10-04 2:05 PM
My oldest will turn 19 in a couple weeks, and everything is so much better with her out of the house! I talked to her on the phone the other night and she actually wanted to talk to me. She didn’t even freak out when I told her I’m getting married. It seems like she actually misses us (after several years of being quite hostile to me all the time). We (2 younger kiddos + me) are heading out to visit her in a week and I think it will actually be quite a nice visit.
I think it will be different with my other 2. They’re much easier to get along with
I would be homicidal if I was still running in the 70s. 65-69 is bad enough!
2018-10-04 10:53 AM
My happy place - mountains. Any mountains, but obviously I spend most of my mountain time in the Rockies.
Maybe I will make it International Taco Day and have a taco for lunch!
I'm doing mini-workouts this week as it seems to be all I have bandwidth for - Tuesday I ran for 20 mins on the TM and did weights; yesterday I ran for 10 mins and then did a Pilates class; today I will probably do another micro-run at the gym on my way home from work and leave it at that. It's nothing impressive but like I said, it's all I can manage.
Good job getting in your workouts!
A mine workout is still a workout!
I meant a mini... not that you were mining
It does a lot more than you probably think. Consistency is also key, and you're doing that
2018-10-04 3:00 PM
Mini workouts are definitely better than no workouts.
Happy Place...IDN...like BG, it used to be while running. Now maybe when I'm on a bike outdoors or indoors when I've got a full room of riders.
I cut my grass this morning & will teach spin class this evening.
Pizza & beer tonight...yeah, not tacos but maybe we'll have them over the weekend to celebrate!
Enjoy the pizza and beer night!
2018-10-04 12:25 PM
Sounds like a great day!
I prefer pizza myself. Enjoy!
5 miles before work.
I have to leave early today to referee a soccer game at a local church so I got the run out of the way early so I could work through lunch. I went down to the riverfront and pushed the pace a little to see how it would go. I was working hard the first mile and was disappointed to only break 9 minutes but settled in after that and the other 4 mikes were better. The cross country ladies were out running easy and they didn’t pull too far away when I was on my way back in. The coach was giving the top runner some advice for their race this weekend.
Happy place would be our large room in the basement with all of the kids home. I’m not sure when that will happen next.
I had grilled tilapia tacos for lunch in honor of national taco day. I knew the fancy taco place across the street from our office would be packed so went to a place that really is more of a burger place but the fish tacos were pretty decent.
I feel like the first mile is always the hardest. I'll feel like I'm sprinting and look down and be slow as a turtle.
2018-10-04 12:25 PM
My first mile is always embarrassingly slow. Sometimes 3-5 minutes slower than the run average. If I try to force it faster, the whole run suffers
Oh, I've had the just under 9 minutes disappointment lately too.
2018-10-04 3:01 PM
I no longer have any faith in the pace of the first mile. It's now officially the warmup mile.
Don't even talk to me about my first mile. Or my last mile. Or most of the in between miles...
I take it you like tacos?
I like them, but DH made them so much for a few years, that we are taking a break. Maybe I can go to Chipotle tonight and get a burrito. Close enough?
Specific Happy Place – getting in my bed at night and curling up in a ball in the covers.
Generic Happy Place – in a car (some form of transportation) going on a trip with my family
Today was long, but lower intensity, stairmonster day. 90 minutes complete. Hardest part mentally was around 20-45 min. Then the HIIT shoulder video. I did better with the HIIT moves of the day.
2018-10-04 12:24 PM
What do HIIT shoulder workouts consist of? Trying to imagine shoulder intervals.
All the HIIT moves are aerobics like. In this one there are 3 groups of stuff. One group = 2 shoulder exercises of 10 reps/no rest followed immediately by a 30 aerobic move. Then rest 15-30 sec and repeat 2x for a total of 3 sets. Then there's some burnout move and 3 sets of 2 ab exercises. I'm not finding those very hard and may have changed it up a bit
The aerobic moves were some jumping on one foot thing, "burpee," and jumping alternating lunge squat. Burpees are in quotes because there was no push-up part. It's not a burpee without a push-up, right?
A burrito is good enough!
And yes, I like tacos, it's kind of a thing.
I like long road trips too. I make several a year.
2018-10-04 3:03 PM
When I go to Chipotle these days, I just get tacos. Everything else is just an absurd size to me!
Both good happy places!
Doesn't a chipotle bean and cheese burrito have like 1200 calories in it? Or was it more...
2018-10-04 11:36 AM
Totally not feeling it with a happy place today. At the moment, I'd say anywhere but here.
10.25 mi this morning (same distance as Tuesday but a completely different route).
Herself and I are going to see A Star Is Born tonight, so we could possibly stop for tacos at a local fast-casual Tex-Mex place. Otherwise, I'll probably make avocado toast using the bread I made the other day.
Hi! Nice to see a sort of new poster maybe?
If you pander enough, Doughboy is known to give you brownies.
2018-10-04 3:08 PM
I was a forum poster back at RW (yes, that long ago) and migrated here, but fell away from posting for a long while. I'm going to try to get into the habit of checking in a little more regularly as I used to.
I was around back then too! Not a marathoner though, just a runner. Happy to see you!
p.s. I like brownies
Where are you located?
2018-10-04 12:23 PM
Enjoy the show!
long time no see! I see you are in the same place as I am
DH and I are seeing that tonight. Herself => DD right? How is she? An adult, I am guessing. Mine are 20&17!!!
2018-10-04 3:09 PM
She will be 23 a week from tomorrow -- and 20 and 17 for you.
Oy, those years have been a blur!
We can compare movie notes tomorrow!
Avocado toast, yum!
Enjoy your evening!
2018-10-04 3:10 PM
So I scored leftover avocado toast at tasting today, so dinner is done. (Today, it's about the only thing I can embrace as a perk!)
Good to "see" you again.
2018-10-04 3:11 PM
Ah, the showdown between Lady Gaga and Barbara Streisand. Let me know who wins.
Remember when "Evergreen" was a top ten hit?
How's the job hunt going?
5.2 miles with 2 peeps
They were struggling so it ended up being a slog but a mile is a mile
It's so hot and just nasty. I really do need to stop complaining but it's tough!
My happy place is the mountains. I love the cool, crisp air and the scenery is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking I've ever seen. I certainly hope T and I can figure out how to have a mountain home someday.
2018-10-04 11:46 AM
If I won the lottery, we would have a nice, modest log home in the Canadian Rockies !!!
Yes, we don't need anything fancy!
2018-10-04 12:10 PM
All of my lottery fantasies involve buying a nice little place in or near Canmore.
mountains too. I like the beach, but I love the mountains. I may have made the mistake of looking at the 10 day forecast for where we were this summer
(and I'm not even in TX! I feel like I need this disclaimer at the end of all my posts!)
Ugh. I don't even want to know.
Yep, Durango is 56 right now. Amazing.
Please don't worry about the complaining. That will be me all winter long.
2018-10-04 3:04 PM
In October, hot and nasty weather is just insulting.
right? I run the run club at our school and it was brutal today. I feel so sorry for the kids.
2018-10-04 11:45 AM
Happy place is running and mountain biking in fundy national park on some nice singletrack. Really anywhere in the woods with nice trails.
For a workout today I did a 30 minute treadmill run at a nice easy pace and some weights for upper body. I moved from full body workout to an upper/lower body split approach. Cloudy, cool, and rainy today and I miss the sun !!! Our youngest has karate tonight and my middle daughter and I are trying to make a stir fry. We are determined to not create another flavorless rubber chicken and mushy vegetable with over cooked rice pile of food
2018-10-04 12:11 PM
Good luck with the stir fry! My DD has been learning to make stir-fry recently - mastering the art of getting everything cooked to the right degree at the same time, without burning the garlic.
2018-10-04 3:06 PM
Add garlic toward the end of stir-frying. It will cook enough to lose the pungent flavor, but shouldn't burn (a different pungent flavor!).
Lol! Good luck tonight! At least you have a partner in crime to share the blame lest it go badly. I've made some whoppers. To this day my kids won't touch tilapia no matter how much I say nobody's will taste as badly as the ones I made
Yes, the trails.
The consensus last week seemed to be that cashews help.
2018-10-04 7:10 PM
stir fry success ! The kids liked it and it was pretty good all in all. Definitely some tweaks but much better than our past attempts.
2018-10-05 7:18 AM
Good job on the stir-fry evolution!
My happy place is on my deck in the sun with my dogs after a run and shower drinking a smoothie and having sweet f all to do
12km with Molly
No tacos happening in my world …. I'm officially calling today International Wine Day and I'm going to get buzzed in a couple of hours and forget about life for awhile...in a good way
2018-10-04 12:23 PM
That sounds lovely
I thought you were on a no alcohol kick?
This has been a day. I really want to do what you're doing.
Yes, I was but I caved in with my unexpected trip to parent-ville …...drinking wine with mommy is sort of an expectation. When I head back to the homestead I'll start again
Hope your day is improving!
2018-10-04 7:11 PM
Enjoy the wine !!!
I’m happy a lot of the day, but some highlights of super-happy places...
-Finishing a morning run on a crisp fall day with a walk through the woods
-The first sip of a beer
-Catching first sight of my fiancée when one of us has flown to visit the other. Running towards each other for that first hug and kiss.
No run today. Still letting the PF rest and nuking it with Aleve.
Did you post the details somewhere?
(Of the proposal
No, I didn’t post details yet, but I can.
Oooo, so, did you do the whole romantic proposal thing? I married the most unromantic man on the planet, so I need to live vicariously through others!
2018-10-04 7:13 PM
Congratulations Tim ! I remember the days of doing the long distance thing and flying to Canada. It seems like a lifetime ago but they were fun times. All we did was plan XC ski outings and fun things to do outdoors. Things have changed a bit lol....
So did you relocate up there, or vice-versa?
Yes, great outdoor culture up there. People don’t let crappy weather keep them inside, they just put on the right gear and get out there. I was there in April and there was still melting snow on the ground. We went down to a playground and the ground was all muddy with icy puddles. In the US those conditions would have made the playground a ghost town. Up there that day, there were easily 20 kids on the playground, all wearing waterproof boots and gloves and so on.
2018-10-05 4:28 AM
I relocated to Canada and am working on the forms for citizenship. I really like it here.
2018-10-05 7:19 AM
Cool. Where are you located? It looks like maybe one of the Maritime provinces?

The Colorado Rockies in the summer and fall, running in Central Park, the start of almost any race...
No real workout today, I'm sort of tapering for whatever race I may be running on Sunday. The MHM RD still hasn't let me know if any spots have opened up for the half. Doing laundry and packing tonight, not leaving until Saturday morning though. It doesn't look like Philip will be able to join me though,
, our son has an all day event on Sunday and there's no one to take care of the dogs.

Work icebreakers SUCK.
I ran 6.1 on a rails to trails path while my son was at soccer practice. Pretty speedy by my standards...
The first and last mile include waiting to cross a busy street.
It was a nice diversion from a stressful day of news. Count it as my happy place.
2018-10-04 7:14 PM
wow fast negative splits. running off some work rage were we ?!?!? Nice job !

No, not work. I’m good at not letting it stress me out. Following the Kavanough story (and Trump in general) provided ample rage.
2018-10-04 9:03 PM
Wow! Super speedy run and wonderful negative splits!
