13.3K trail race this morning. It was 28 degrees and freezing rain when we left the house.
Rain quit and it warmed up to a balmy 30 degrees for the race. A few snowflakes here and there and windy. Glad we were in the woods.
Started out with a small group but by about mile 3 or so I was more or less alone. I don’t know why but I totally hit the wall at about mile 7 when a guy, and then soon after, a girl passed me. I had NOTHING left. I’ve never had such a sudden feeling like that. Kind of got my bearings and starting plugging along. Noticed I was at 7.48 miles. According to my calculations 13.3K was 8.26 miles so I knew I didn’t have much further to go so tried to pick the pace up again. Still had the guy and the girl in sight and honestly thought I’d be able to catch them, and maybe even pass them, once we got off the trail and hit the road for the finish. Not the case. 8.26 miles came and went and there was no sign of the finish.
Talk about a mental let down.
Kept plugging along and after a long climb caught a glimpse of the road. Finished in 1:33:47. My Garmin showed 8.63 miles.
I ended up first in my AG and Iowa got Master’s winner in the 7.7K race with a time of 47:54.
