Up Topic General / Letters and Opinions / Philly / Delaware FE in April
- - By nooner [us] Date 2018-02-27 4:18 PM
There are some of the Marathon forumites who are working on running a marathon in every state and we occasionally are able to find a state that we all need. The first opportunity for 2018 is the Coastal Delaware Running Festival on April 22 and we'd love to have others join in the fun!

The race is held in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware which is almost equidistant from the Philadelphia & BWI airports (2 hours away) and New York City is 4 hours away.

Races offered include the marathon, half marathon and a 9K. They are coming up with new courses for 2018 but previous comments all praise the race for a scenic, flat course.

You can get more information here:

If you aren't able to commit to the Delaware race, there could be a possibility of a smaller FE in the Philly area on Saturday morning, April 21. Blazer85 and her running buddy fly into Philly on Friday and I will be coming in from outside of town where my family lives to pick them up and drive down to the race. I was thinking that a late breakfast / brunch time could be workable since there are a number of people local to that area.

Let us know if either of those sound interesting.

Dangit again. Blazer posted this racing festival a while ago as a good FE and it's close enough to me and I love Rehoboth but I'll be out of the country that weekend. And now sadder to learn that I'll miss you too. But good going on your 50-state quest, race well, have fun with whomever makes it there because it's guaranteed to be a great time, and make sure to eat some Grotto Pizza at some point.

Thanks.

If you would let me know which hotel in Philly, I can scope out locations for breakfast / bruch.

I’d love to go back to DiaperMan’s place but it may be further out of the way than most people would like.

Parent - - By nooner [us] Date 2018-03-01 9:29 AM
Cool! We have enough traction for the breakfast / brunch so we can move forward with that.

For those folks driving in from NJ what would be an ok time?
Parent - By Beastie Girl [us] Date 2018-03-01 10:34 AM
It's about a 2-hour drive for me so really any time 9 or later is good! Thanks for coordinating!
Parent - By Ed [us] Date 2018-03-01 12:18 PM
Any breakfast/brunch time would be ok for me.  I'll be coming in from NJ but I'm this close >.< to Philly.

OK, we're less than 2 weeks away so we need to lock down the details on this.

We're planning on meeting at 10 AM which will give those folks driving in from NJ time to get there. I had a great place all picked out but they just closed due to a fire , so I am working on my plan B.

I'd prefer to be able to place a reservation since it should be a decent sized group & we don't want to be waiting around for a long time. So, we need to get an idea of who will be there.

From the responses, the following people expressed interest:

Beastie Girl

If you didn't respond and are interested, please chime in and we will add you to the group. When responding, please indicate the total number in your party if you are bringing your spouse, significant other, or young child so we can plan accordingly.

Also, if any of the local Philly folks have a favorite spot for breakfast in Center City please let us know and we can check it out.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Amanda and I are in.

ACK! Darn it. I really wanted to make this work, but it turns out that I have another family commitment in NYC that weekend

I do have many recs for breakfast in CC, however. Unfortunately a lot of great brunch type places don't take reservations. Some of my favorites:

Honey's Sit N Eat, 21st and South
Cafe Lift, 13th and Callowhill Sts (a little north of center city)
Morning Glory Diner (10th and Fitzwater)
Sabrinas (9th and Christian; 18th and Callowhill)
Green Eggs Cafe (13th and Locust)

All of these places are excellent. HOWEVER. A good standby if you want to make a reservation would probably be Marathon Grill, and no, I'm not just mentioning it for the name. It's not the best food you've ever had, but it's fine, and it has multiple locations and I'm pretty sure takes reservations.

Another place to check out: The Continental. A little more flashy/hipster than Marathon, but still takes reservations and I've heard does a decent brunch. 18th and Chestnut

OK, hopefully that is helpful! enjoy! I'm so sorry to miss this

Sorry that you won’t be able to make this, it would have been fun to put a face (and voice) to the name.

Thanks for the restaurant list! Of those, I think that the Marathon Grill is a perfect fit. The Little Lion was my first choice and back-ups include FARMiCia and High Street on Market.

My wife and I are driving down Saturday Morning to DE.  Is anything going on for Dinner?
Parent - - By nooner [us] Date 2018-04-10 8:46 AM
Yes, I have some places targeted for dinner on Saturday, but need to see about a reservation. Looking forward to seeing you!

The post-race spot will have to be at the Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats. :mischief:
Parent - By Beastie Girl [us] Date 2018-04-10 9:36 AM
Dogfish will be the perfect post-race place!

That goes unsaid....

Cool! There’s always space for more!

I was thinking about doing the Marathon Grill (16th & Locust). Is that a good kid-friendly spot?
Parent - - By classicsnerd [us] Date 2018-04-16 3:04 PM
yes, that's great! Definitely kid friendly.
Parent - - By nooner [us] Date 2018-04-17 9:57 AM
It turns out that the Marathon Grill does not accept reservations for their brunch hours.

We can either take our chances and see how long it will take to sit the 6 of us or I have a back-up reservation at Farmicia at 10 AM.

The Continetal would also take a reservation so that is another option. I would appreciate your input as I think you’d have a better idea which option is best.
Parent - - By classicsnerd [us] Date 2018-04-17 10:10 AM
Selfishly (since I will have toddler with me), I'd vote for Continental midtown. It's larger and has a larger menu than Farmicia. It's also right in center city, so a bit closer to more public transportation - Farmicia is in Old City, so it's a bit more of a walk from Regional Rail stations. Not a huge distance further, but a bit further.
Parent - - By nooner [us] Date 2018-04-17 11:04 AM
That's exactly the input I was hoping for.

We are set for 10 AM at the Continental Midtown:

1801 Chestnut Street
Philadelphia, Pa 19103

Reservation under the name Gibbons. looking forward to seeing everyone there.

I am so sorry, but things have changed since I posted in February. My house is going on the market in a week, and tomorrow the house is being staged and photographed. So I will not be able to attend Philly.

Have a great time everyone, and runners, run like the wind!

Just tell me when & where to show up!
