Saw "Darkest Hour" last night.  It did not leave me with a favorable impression of Mr. Churchill as a person.  Still, I'm interested in reading a good biography of the man, and not just about his tenure as Prime Minister.  Any recommendations???

I think all leaders from "way back" will have some sort of despotic vibe to them.
He was also from aristocracy so he probably looked down on the common man.
He took a lot of "historic decisions", but with disregard to common people's lives.

The movie emphasized his decision to set up the 4,000 troops at Calais (sp?) as a sacrificial offering.  Not sure what else he could have done.

Churchill was responsible for the fiasco at Gallipoli in WW I.  He also secretly gave much of what was Poland to the USSR in a private meeting with Stalin in 1944.  In addition to this, in 1940, he was willing to give portions of France to Mussolini if Mussolini remained neutral in WW II.
Not saying he was a bad guy.  For perspective, you need a complete picture, warts and all.

The three-volume biography by William Manchester. All are titled "The Last Lion", however the subtitles are "Visions of Glory 1874-1932", "Alone 1932-1940", and "Defender of the Realm 1940-1965".

I've got the first volume on hold.  Of all the volumes listed on Amazon, this work looked like the best bet for understanding what made him tick.

I may have had Thai food in Chicago several years ago, but DW and I went out to a local Thai place last night.  I got a sweet 'n sour something or other.  It was okay, but nothing to really get excited about.  Do all Thai sweet 'n sour dishes have the consistency of tomato paste?

No, and you must really have chosen a non-Thai dish, because it sounds like some sort of "Europeanized Chinese" dish.
Usually Thai is a bit more fresh with more vegetables and spicy :wtf:

It seemed that much of the menu contained ginger, which is okay, but a very domineering flavor.

that makes sense though

When  a contemporary such as John Mahoney passes on, it does forcibly focus one's attention. RIP John

A friend of my younger son and his fiancé passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. Everyone who knew this man was saddened as well as surprised. Their friend was younger than I am.

I'm traveling and staying at an apartment hotel. There is a keurig coffee maker and everything comes out of it luke warm. :wtf:

There are few things more annoying than a microwave where the stop and start buttons are the opposite of the way it is at home. Ive lost count of the number of times I've set the timer and then accidentally cancelled. :meh::cry:

I miss summer.

A cocktail grapefruit tree, a type of dwarf grapefruit. That is apparently what I've taken charge of. This tree is putting out the best, sweets grapefruits I have ever had.

I had a brush with our ridiculous health care system over the weekend -- went to pick up a prescription and it was $1500.  :shocker!:  It was not for anything particularly serious, so I did not pay for it, but yikes.

Damn. $1500? :shocker!:

in my experience, a bit of anti-fungal cream cures everything.
