40 degrees here; it felt gloriously warm! I woke up at 5:30 and ran 8.2 miles before working from home. Was pretty nice and peaceful to run alone in the dark although I did catch quite a few people leaving for work.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2018-01-11 9:18 AM
It felt very nice. I was glad to have worn lightweight tights though - the wind over the icy lake was pretty brisk.
Parent - - By Spingoddess [us] Date 2018-01-11 9:21 AM
It's supposed to hit 50° here today, 58° tomorrow, then be like 14° on Sunday.:meh: Mother Nature's off her meds again.

Enjoy the weather while we have it!

5.5 miles in my neighborhood with my neighbor. We were both over dressed for a run starting in the mid 40's. What a nice change!

Nice run!  Hope you didn't get too sweaty.

Right? I was overdressed today and had to take my long sleeve off!

Of course, now it's crazy cold outside.
Parent - - By old turtle Date 2018-01-11 4:29 PM
 Of course. It got to as high as 63 here and it is still 63. What a difference a week makes. (Ice on koi pond is still melting.)

Nicely done in nice conditions. It was a decent 40F here at lunchtime, but still seemed kind of raw. Despite my head cold, I got out for a gentle 3.5 miles along the river at lunchtime.

5.1 miles. WHY OH WHY DID I NOT GO THE EXTRA .1?:cry:

We did the 15 hill route. Two of us pulled away and did it quicker than we ever have. I am spent but feel strong.
Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2018-01-11 8:49 AM
Interestingly, the route that I ran has always come out between 5.25 and 5.3 on my Garmin. Today it read 5.16.

Actually wait, that wasn't interesting at all.

8 miles with 4.5 at tempo. The tempo miles felt so much harder than last week. But it was a good run overall. Followed with some arm weights. I'll spin tonight, trying to bank some workouts because I want to take Saturday completely off, have a 5K race on Sunday morning, the first of a 4 race series that Beastiegirl's coach promoted. I hate 5Ks, but they do get me to push myself, so in keeping with that NY resolution to challenge myself more... I'll do it.

After I finish this awe-inspiring cup of coffee, I'll head out to the dogs.
Parent - - By Beastie Girl [us] Date 2018-01-11 9:26 AM

Parent - By Spingoddess [us] Date 2018-01-11 4:21 PM
I love Michael, but I don't think the short intervals work well for me as speedwork. A 5K is a short interval for longer races.

"Banking workouts."  Interesting idea!

Overall weekly mileage is worth something too, though I think it's more important to be consistent throughout the week.

I have a 5K race as well, that is also a part of a series (once a month for 4 months). This is the second. I also hate 5k's .But I needed something to get some speed back or see how I was progressing in getting it back.
- - By skigirl Date 2018-01-11 9:31 AM
Just back from a 30-ish minute run.  I was tired when I woke up this morning, and it's still cold here (-28C/-18F), and I was briefly tempted to skip the run, and then I thought of a mantra that flyingkiwi (forumite on Women's) posted once: "Don't think, just do."  So I got up, got all my layers on, went out for my run, allowed myself to shuffle at first when I wasn't feeling springy enough for actual running, and kept repeating "Don't think just do don't think just do don't think just do..."  That got it done.

Yesterday my phone froze up during my run despite my precaution of tucking it into a layer close to my body, so today I tried a new experiment: I pulled out a small (maybe 3" x 3") buckwheat bag we have - one of those thingies that you microwave if you want a hot pack for a sore muscle.  Microwaved it for a minute, and stuck it in my pocket along with my phone, so that the phone could ride along in its own little world of warmth.  : pbbt:  Seemed to work 'cause it was still alive at the end of my run when I stopped to take a frosty-whiskered photo of myself and the dog.  : pbbt::laugh:
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2018-01-11 10:38 AM
Good for you for getting out there! OK, that is COLD.

Laughing at the phone snuggled in its own little warm world...

You did it! :cool::cool:

Ha! Glad your phone made it.
Parent - By Spingoddess [us] Date 2018-01-11 4:04 PM
That is serious cold! When I ran the Winter Beast Ultra in 2014, I used those hand warmers tucked in my inner pocket with my phone to keep it warm, worked fairly well. Nowadays I just run on the treadmill.
Parent - By classicsnerd [us] Date 2018-01-11 6:01 PM
You are awesome!! way to go! excellent mantra
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2018-01-11 7:19 PM
Who'd have ever thought we'd all be running with phones?  Obviously someone needs to work on a way to increase the operational temperatures for our devices.
- - By Arimathea [us] Date 2018-01-11 10:37 AM
3 this morning. I wok up, dozed off again, then RN texted to ask if I was running. Got up, stumbled through my routine, and headed out, caught up with her after she made her turnaround and was coming back and ran back with her. So 3 because I didn't quite make the 3.2 turnaround. She was pleased to get the 4. Mind you, she realized halfway through her run that her prep was faster than usual because she forgot to take out her mouthguard and brush her teeth.

Aiming for the gym today since I didn't make it yesterday. We had a 1:30 PM webinar on women's issues in the company, broadcast into the boardroom. I figured since it was a women's resource group thing that I could bring my knitting to work on during the call since it's a pink hat. Now a number of colleagues want a pink hat!
Parent - By skigirl Date 2018-01-11 3:23 PM

- - By blazer85 [us] Date 2018-01-11 10:58 AM
Instead of running first thing, I had to deal with a work thing for someone by 8:00. Since they are in ET and I am in CT, that meant 7:00 am for me. ANYHOO, I didn't head out for my 9 miles until 7:30 and went to the office late.  Will go to boxing class after work.

Blazergirl heads back to school tomorrow, so we are going out to dinner tonight at some new Ramen place.....a ton of them have been popping up around here lately.

- - By PuddleThumper Date 2018-01-11 11:55 AM
aha! i missed the forum coming back. thanks and yay!

of course i have not run since saturday.  :meh::mutmad: Did the next 2 mile race of the series saturday morning. we'd had a lot of rain so the road course was much more XC than usual with some sections very mucky and/or with water running over the path. all my runs that week had been slow and slower which was odd but i chalked it up the more moderate to tempo-y miles of the 8 mile trail race the weekend before. Between mucky course and dead feeling legs i just could not run and was slower than the first race. I was pretty annoyed with this.

And then i came down with a cough and fever saturday night and have been sick ever since. :shocker!: Flu. I don't think i've had a flu this bad before except when i was a kid. i'm still running a temp, coughing a ton and just generally disgusting. : pbbt: Fortunately Dh has also gotten it.:shocker!::sad: We are a dynamic duo right now!

i've not been into work all week and urgent care and current flu guidelines suggest not returning to work until 24 hours fever free, that's not going to happen this week. i've been working on line a couple hours each day (6 yesterday ) and have been scrambling to cover some stuff while i'm out. ugh no fun.

a few bright notes this week: none of our elderly parents seem to have got it. i can see why a bad flu can be deadly. :shocker!: and it's been awful weather here all week with torrential rain. So a great week not to be running.:cry:

- - By Ed [us] Date 2018-01-11 12:29 PM
I'll get my workout for today by teaching indoor cycling class tonight.  Playlist on Spotify if anyone's interested.  This is my first crack at have any post-Jan 1 "resolutioners" in my evening class since it was cancelled last week when the gym closed early due to snow.  While recording my attendance numbers yesterday morning I noticed the Tues. night class had 20 riders so perhaps that's an omen?

Should also do hip exercises.

We had a pretty good turnout at our running club meeting last night.  A much higher % of women than usual, likely since our guest speaker discussed a book she wrote about women who do triathlons.

It's 55F here right now!
Parent - By skigirl Date 2018-01-11 3:25 PM

5 miles at noon.

The weather forecast was calling for rain throughout the day so my co-worker ran first thing this morning to get it out of the way. I brought Treadmill stuff just in case, but the radar looked pretty clear and I was able to get in most of the run without any rain. There was just a little drizzle in the last half mile, but with temps in the mid-60’s, that felt pretty good at that point. My stride was really feeling “off” recently, so I focused on things during the run today to try and even it out a bit and it seemed to work. I have a half marathon on Saturday so will need to see how it holds up through the longer distance.
Parent - - By skigirl Date 2018-01-11 3:26 PM
Nice run!  Do you have a time goal for your half-marathon?
Parent - By nooner [us] Date 2018-01-11 5:10 PM
Not really. A friend is coming in from out of town to run the marathon so my goal is to try and keep up with her for the 9 miles that the courses share. : pbbt:

nice, just strenuous enough yoga practice, then 2.7 miles on the trail. Meant to do 4, but due to melting snow and slick leaves, I had a big wipeout and called it a day. Still felt great to be out there. 55*!!! :shocker!:

Last night I ran 4 with the group. It felt good to squeeze in a run before the weather went to heck again.

I had an SDO planned today, but took it to a new level by sleeping in until 7:45a. :shocker!: I'm wondering if I subconsciously hit the wrong button on the alarm. It seemed a very long night even for January and then I happened to glance at the clock. I must admit it felt great even though I never got to shower or fix my rumpled appearance. One of the days that between the weather and the sleeping in, I really appreciated the remote work place.
- - By foggydoggy [us] Date 2018-01-11 7:14 PM
3.25 miles on the TM.  I did a hill workout.  1 mile at 1%, 1.7 miles at 3-3.5%, and .3 miles at 6% at a steady pace.  I need to work up to 2 miles at 6% to be ready for Big Sur.  Course at big sur I need to run 10 miles (that aren't flat) do the hill workout and then run another 14 miles (that aren't flat)
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2018-01-11 7:38 PM
You have to start somewhere.
Parent - By Beastie Girl [us] Date 2018-01-12 7:54 AM
Nice workout! I'm running Big Sur too! But I'm doing it "for fun" and not for time, so no structured hill work for me. I ran Sugarloaf last year on no hill work, and that's a stupid hilly course too, so I'm hoping the same will work for me for Big Sur.

Old habit die hard:  I replied instead of posted.  So if you are reading this before I had time to delete, you may think my workout was so amazing that I posted it twice.

Alas, no.  I lifted some heavy stuff, then did some intervals on the treadmill.  The dog was especially helpful challenging my balance on planks.
