Fire.  I'm at school, at the airport. It is snowing bits of black burned grass.:mutmad:

I have a post about the "Me Too" movement that I need to add but can't type well on my phone. In short, my mom has some upsetting tales. So did a gay friend. There's several points and a tangent I'd like to describe.:mutmad:

Who doesn't have an upsetting tale of sexual harassment these days. It'd be a way shorter list.

Great news....just got a new window in the bathroom that opens and closes to the outside world.  Venting Time indeed!

Nice. I will vent about registering my kid for swimming lessons. You have to wait online for the countdown to when registration opens. Then every mom in the entire city of 2.5+ million people rush the gates at once and by the time you're thru all the spots are gone! Guh!:mutmad:
Parent - - By blazer85 [us] Date 2017-12-05 10:15 AM
:mutmad:  Been there, done that.  That type of stuff sucks.
Parent - - By BrookieCookie (Canadian Beaver) Date 2017-12-05 10:20 AM
I was refreshing my phone with my left hand and my laptop browser with my right hand and it still took me 13 minutes to get through. I got him the very last spot of our least desired timeslot ... but at least I got him something so I'm counting it as a win.
Parent - - By Tommeke Date 2017-12-05 5:45 PM
nothing like a 5 AM swim practice to toughen up that kid

And summer camps, and sports, and clubs, etc...
Parent - By BrookieCookie (Canadian Beaver) Date 2017-12-05 1:56 PM
Summer camp is going to suck if it goes like today there's no way we'll get a spot. We only got one because it's a relatively obscure program (Guardian Swim) but March Break camp reg was gumming up the work I'm sure of it.
Parent - By Tommeke Date 2017-12-05 5:46 PM
In Belgium you have parents camping in front of the school binding to register their kids.
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-12-05 12:02 PM
Oh yes. Been there. Swim classes are particularly awful to get your kid into because there are only so many slots.
Parent - - By mutiger [us] Date 2017-12-05 8:13 PM
your kid is old enough for swimming lessons :shocker!: Mine is 7.5 and I have not enrolled him yet
Parent - By BrookieCookie (Canadian Beaver) Date 2017-12-06 8:01 AM
It's Guardian classes so it's more for the parents than anything. It's for 6mo - 4yr. I'm trying to start some good early habits and such! : pbbt:
Parent - By old turtle Date 2017-12-08 8:44 AM
Mut, it's time to enroll that kid!
Parent - By callie [ca] Date 2017-12-06 12:35 PM
I hear you. Swimming registration day is a gladiator sport here.

runners who post pictures of their ugly effed up feet. so what, you lost a toenail  (sorry LDR, you were just the latest ). not sure what the point of posting something like that is.

two people in my life. smart people who say "supposeably". IT. IS. NOT. A. WORD.

the multi selfies per day fb friend. i'm torn on this one because some of it is so unintentionally comical. singing "Despardo" with meaningful furrowed brow was a hoot  the constant "food shaming" because you are a "fat burner" is beyond tiresome. and no. even if i did do zumba, i would not count those steps toward my yearly mileage tally. but you go girl!
Parent - - By LDR (100 Mile Stud) [us] Date 2017-12-06 9:06 AM

i've wanted that toenail gone for a long, long time.
i had soaked, dremeled, and picked at that thing,
trying to remove it, to no avail.
it seemed that the only option left was to see a podiatrist,
and that costs $usd

to have it suddenly release from the toenail bed for no apparent reason was almost miraculous,
so, it really did seem like a big deal, at least at that moment.

also, i taught junior high for many years.

Wait, no pliers?!

Congrats!
Parent - By LDR (100 Mile Stud) [us] Date 2017-12-07 7:03 AM
I have tried to use something that might be described as a metal snip, just to take off the top layer or two of dead nail.  That was before I learned about dremels, about a year ago at Icarus.  The dremel is a lot safer.
Parent - - By oitsubob [us] Date 2017-12-06 3:35 PM
Actually according to the Oxford dictionary "supposably" is a word. Definition: As may be supposed; imaginably; presumably; supposedly.

It has been a word since the 18th century.

According to "spellcheck," I am often guilty of making up words.  They sound good to me, however, so I leave them in

Me too, though for once, it's outside of my immediate world. Definitely nothing I can fix/control/change, but :cry::mutmad::mutmad:
Parent - - By mutiger [us] Date 2017-12-07 4:37 PM
There are things that are simply out of our control, and trying to fix them leads only to more heart burn. I'm even letting things that are very close to me go for that reason, save me the heartburn and save them the anger aand resentment if I spoke out, both professionally and personally.

School was closed today because of smoke. :mutmad:
Parent - - By N70SAK Date 2017-12-06 11:40 AM
The Ventura fire burned between Oak View (where I was living just a few months ago) and the city of Ventura. I would have been facing mandatory evacuation. :meh: The fire continued all the way through oil company land to Faria Beach, where just one line of homes, the 101 FWY, and train tracks keep it from burning right to the ocean.

I was just watching some video taken from a freeway and couldn't believe that the road hadn't been shut down.:shocker!::cry:

it was just a little later.

my kid's school is closed for the second day in a row.  One of his classmates lost his home in the Bel Air fire.  The air quality in my neighborhood was horrible yesterday and  traffic was nightmarish due to the 405 closure.  What's going on in Ventura county is insane.
Parent - By N70SAK Date 2017-12-08 8:30 AM
:meh:North Valley Occupational Center(LAUSD) has been closed since Wednesday.  3 days off school sounds nice but it screws up the schedule set to satisfy FAA requirements. Each section(general, airframe and powerplant) is divided into subjects.  A certain number of hours must be spent on each subject, regardless of performance. This means the entire schedule is offset 3 days. Coincidentally, the shortest subject (Position and Warning) is just 3 days and would have been the last 3 days before Winter break.  Although this gives a bit more time to finish the current subject, in the long run, it may mean that some people have to register for an extra quarter($350) just to finish the section.

And, as it turns out, the  last few days have been reasonable in the Valley. Tuesday, the worst and the day we all had to suffer in the smoke.  One good thing about having these days off, is that people don't have to deal with the traffic and students come from all over the area. I would have been evacuated if I was still in VC.  One of my classmates lives in Filmore and may have been forced out yesterday... The Ojai area has no drinkable water along with no power.

- gas jumped 35 cents yesterday, but the price of oil is coming down.  :wtf:
- get yourselves ready for the new Windows update.  It takes awhile...
Parent - - By Blueberry Sky Date 2017-12-06 4:13 PM
Gas here is a $1 more than where I used to live.:laugh:
It has dropped .06 recently, I should be happy, right?
Parent - - By LDR (100 Mile Stud) [us] Date 2017-12-07 6:55 AM's all relative, I guess.  My state, Indiana, is considering raising the tax on gasoline to help fund highway construction and repair. :meh:
Parent - - By Blueberry Sky Date 2017-12-07 2:58 PM
Anchorage just passed a road repair tax, but it's not on the agenda up here in Fairbanks. The roads reflect this.:laugh:
That said, despite the spendy gas, I love my incredibly cold, snowy, dark, northern lights every night, new town.

Wow!  Living in Alaska now!  Is this a permanent move or just for a few years?  I've always thought about living in Alaska, but would need to visit before every committing.
Parent - By LDR (100 Mile Stud) [us] Date 2017-12-08 2:34 PM
Gas most places is in the $2.50 - $2.60 range.  Filled up at Costco for $2.24
