Up Topic General / Letters and Opinions / Happy Remembrance and Veterans Dailies Saturday 11/11

Yeah I'm a little early, but will be leaving tomorrow morning early to head up to a football game. Remembrance Day is kind of a combination of the U.S. Veteran's Day and Memorial Day, and we and our ancestors around the world are and were in it together. So let's all honor and celebrate those who served us by doing something and reporting it here. I'l do something tomorrow, just not sure what...

My kid is in Calgary tonight and already has gone for a run, and reported that everyone is wearing poppies honoring Remembrance Day.

Oh and 11/11 also is time to wish my bro Hardwoodrunner a Happy Birthday!

So whatcha got?

I just watched the Last Post on TV from Ypres.
Princess Anne was present (daughter of Queen Elizabeth II) and a lot of representatives of Canada, New Zealand, Australia, USA ,India and many other countries.

    'When You Go Home,
Tell Them Of Us And Say,
    For Their Tomorrow,
    We gave Our Today'.

Nice and worth considering.

Might be a tad chilly in the stadium today!  At least it's sunny.

Ohhhhhhhh Snaaaaaaaap!

8 miles on the Neuse River Greenway for me. (Way too slow but just the same...)
Also, a Happy Birthday to my older son.
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 2:00 PM
8 miles moving forward is still an accomplishment.
Parent - By Buggy [us] Date 2017-11-11 3:57 PM
8 miles is still 8 miles! Nice job!! Happy birthday to your DS

Sounds like a great run! Miles are miles!

A nice 5 today on the trails along the lake in sunny cold conditions. Low 30's I suppose, but really very nice running weather. The running, it felt pretty good today, and the Lady made a new friend who happened to be an older gentleman, a Penn State fan, sort of giving me a hard time about running in the Buckeye colors today. We had a nice chat though regardless.

Thanks to all who have served.   :salute:

5.3 miles for me today.
Parent - - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 1:59 PM
Solid run. Anything over five and I feel like I've earned a treat
Parent - By triplejake (The Vampire Lestat) [us] Date 2017-11-11 2:25 PM
Thanks.  This was my first time over 5 in several months, so I definitely feel like a treat!

Yay TJ!

12 miles on a beautiful morning! It was 30 degrees when we started, and 41 when we finished. We had a light dusting of snow from the night before that all melted while we were out. After that last cold blast, it felt like spring!!

Happy just isn't the right word. I am a veteran and my dad served during the Korean Conflict. They lost one man during his tour. We lost five during mine. I witnessed the loss of four. I appreciate the honoring of those who served. I hope to convey this as best I can. Let's all please stop using happy in conjunction with this remembrance. Somber Veteran's Day would be far more correct.

Because I am a complete numbers dork and 11 is one of my favorites, I set out at 11:11 on 11/11 to run 11.11 miles. I covered that distance under clear skies with temperatures in the 60's while wearing my New Balance Zante V2 Fresh Foam.

I thank all who served & happy birthday to your brother!
Parent - By Mookiethedog Date 2017-11-11 7:40 PM
Funny you should mention that....I was concerned about my little emoji guy when I posted my message and realized it's a hug which is what I want to convey

I didn't realize you are a vet and your dad's service.  I (thankfully)only ever took Basic Training and the conflicts then were peace keeping missions in the former Yugoslavia...Bosnia-Herz, Croatia, Serbia.  Never had to step up to the plate but I can appreciate from afar how REAL it gets.

I'm a numbers dork too and think what you did today was a great tribute.

The service I attended today was great.  Only one WWII vet and he was/is an American.  Lovely guy....was a POW late in the war in Europe.  We lost a great guy here who was dual citizen too but fought in Korea as an American.  A man with one of the most finely tuned perspectives I've ever met. (Long story)

Anyway....our 2 minutes of silence was somber.  I thought of my family tree and how fortunate I am to have been given the chance of life.....and the lives lost that never got a chance to write a proper story

Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 9:07 PM
Lots to think about. Have to say you are right and that's a well thought tribute.
Parent - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-11-12 4:10 PM
You're absolutely right that happy isn't the right word and I thought about that since starting the thread and before reading this, and apologize for using the word. I have family, friends and acquaintances who served and were killed or damaged in pretty much every conflict since WWI and maybe before. That's not happy, except that I'm happy to honor them and all who served. Somber is a way better word, and we should respect, honor and thank for the service including yours and that's what I meant to convey but didn't. Sorry.

12.4 mile loop around Lake Monona with my wife. Cold and blustery.

My am and I are going to the UW/Iowa football game this afternoon. I don’t have good feelings about this one.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-11-11 11:10 AM
Am?  That’s supposed to say son.
Parent - By redraider0528 (Fashionista) Date 2017-11-11 11:58 AM
Enjoy! The Iowa teams are surprising!
Parent - By Xtreme Taper Date 2017-11-11 12:55 PM
Nice run and good luck with the game today. Iowa could be on a roll, but the Badgers are at home.
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 1:53 PM
At least can be consoled by having a good run under your belt if things don't go well.
Parent - - By Buggy [us] Date 2017-11-11 3:59 PM
Nice run!! I hope the game went better than you expected <<too lazy to go look up the score >>
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-11-11 10:48 PM
Badger defense dominated. Held Iowa to 55 yards, 0 third down conversions and 0 points. Final score was 38-14. Iowa got two tds off pick sixes. Hornibrook is UW’s weak link. He is just an awful quarterback.

Michigan will be a test next week.

Since I have the kids, we went to the gym.
A nice little Saturday chipper

70 reverse lunges with 25 lb plate overhead
60 HR push ups
50 weighted V ups
40 pull ups
30 deadlifts
20 power cleans
10 front squat

I'm whipped.

Went to the gym & did my walking there since it was in the 20s this morning & I can't generate enough body heat at the meager pace I'm walking.  1.5 miles + a set of hip exercises.

Going to an "Irish Wake" at a local pub after dinner tonight for the Tri club I've belonged to the past 4 or 5 years.  Disbanding after 10 years due to insufficient interest   I'm still on several meds so I'll be consuming nonalcoholic drinks tonight :meh:
Parent - - By Xtreme Taper Date 2017-11-11 12:56 PM
Hope you are off the meds soon. An Irish Wake with no booze does not compute!
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 1:50 PM
:laugh:kind of my thought too-not that I'm suggesting drowning your sorrows will solve the disbanding trip club dilemma.
Parent - - By Buggy [us] Date 2017-11-11 4:01 PM
Wow 1.5 miles! How many days post surgery are you?
Parent - By Ed [us] Date 2017-11-12 6:16 AM
19 days as of yesterday.

I chose to go to the post run get together to have coffee and socialize in spite of the fact that I did not run. I must say I absolutely love sleeping in and going to that part a lot. I don't even miss the run.

Tried an Americano with steamed milk. Enjoyed it enough that I may try again soon.
Parent - - By rob26.2 Date 2017-11-11 2:21 PM
Hey noquitter!

Tomorrow I will have on an orange long-sleeve throw-away shirt, blue shorts and chartreuse Mizuno shoes.  If you see me, come say hi.  If we don't meet, have a great race!
Parent - - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 4:15 PM
If I see anyone with an orange shirt and chartreuse shoes, I will have to say hi. There can't be that many I wouldn't think.:wtf:: pbbt:

I am struggling with the shorts tights dilemma. Thinking long sleeved shirt and shorts will be the best bet for a race, but before and after are the challenge.

Have a great race yourself if I miss you!
Parent - - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-11-11 4:39 PM
Shiver beforehand and have sweatpants in the car to put on afterwards, or check them.
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 9:04 PM
I have a pretty wide tolerance for what I count as shorts weather. My legs don't get cold like my upper body.
Parent - - By redraider0528 (Fashionista) Date 2017-11-11 2:56 PM
An americano sounds great!!
Have fun tomorrow!!
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 4:15 PM
Thanks!

Our club does that after the Sunday morning group run.  4.5 years ago I had to give up running but I still meet them for coffee & socializing!
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 4:17 PM
I decided today it's the best  part.
Parent - - By Buggy [us] Date 2017-11-11 4:03 PM
My running friends are some of my best friends  Glad you had the chance to hang out this morning, even without the run.
Parent - By noquitter [us] Date 2017-11-11 4:21 PM
Someone once advised me during a rough patch to join a running group. It took me a long time find a group that was consistent and motivated like the people I run with now. It's great that there are people who are faster, slower or more accomplished that I can learn from, but more importantly there is always someone who wants to run.
- - By rob26.2 Date 2017-11-11 2:15 PM
No run! But I did jog into a running store to get my race packet.  Gobbler Grind Marathon tomorrow. Supposed to be 40 with light winds at the start so that sounds good to me.
Parent - By redraider0528 (Fashionista) Date 2017-11-11 2:57 PM

I hope you liked the hoodie! I'm curious since I loved the one from a couple of years back.
