Up Topic General / Letters and Opinions / RWOL finally pulling the plug
- - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-09-25 8:22 PM
So much for their community.

I know RW wasn't anything like what it used to be, but it still saddens me to see them give up completely. Those forums have been the gateway to a running community for so many people. And not everyone is on Facebook.
Parent - - By coleman Date 2017-09-25 10:27 PM
yeah, I agree...learned a lot when I first started running from RW forums (mostly from those who moved here)

Seems like this place has lost many as well...
Parent - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-09-28 4:18 PM
Yes this place has lost many as well, including you. I love it when peeps like you come back, even just for a cameo now and again.

When you think of it, it's pretty amazing that so many of us came here and are still here in this renegade forum. Even lasting beyond the corporate parent's demise. This is a true family, dysfunctional as it has been over the years.:hug:
Parent - - By PoopedColt Date 2017-09-26 2:31 AM
wow.  The end of an era.  How long was it?  I started in '99, but thought stormcatcher and a few others were there in '97?  I owe a lot to the forums. Just so sad to see it go away completely.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-09-26 4:14 AM
I was on the shoe forum in college. Must have been 98 or 99 when I joined.
Parent - - By Buggy [us] Date 2017-09-26 5:47 AM
I think I started in 97 or 98. I had a different forum name then; trying to remember what the heck it was!

Bug'sMom?
Parent - By Buggy [us] Date 2017-09-27 6:04 AM
That was the second form name. I remember I thought my first name was dumb, so I only used it for a year or two. It was (something)Susie, I think. I just can't remember what the something was.
Parent - By ironjen Date 2017-09-26 6:12 AM
I started in 98 there. I haven't been there though since we migrated here. I also owe a lot.
Parent - - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-09-26 8:59 AM
I started on RW in January 2003, after having lost a bunch of weight and with the kids old enough to stay with Dan for a few hours I started taking running more seriously again. I hadn't run a full since 1996.
Parent - By swandive Date 2017-10-02 7:52 PM
I joined RW sometime around January or February of 2003 as well.  I'm almost certain it was toward the beginning of the spring semester of my senior year of college.  I haven't been back over to RW in years, but this does feel a bit like the end of an era.
Parent - - By tahoeblue (spamkiller) Date 2017-09-27 10:55 AM
I was looking for the oldest RW members.  If I recall correctly, they changed the forum about 2001/2002 an everyone had to register and all history was lost.

Anyway - I happened to notice one of the first registrations for the current forum.
Parent - - By PoopedColt Date 2017-09-28 5:25 AM
:shocker!::laugh:  I hate that a lot of it was lost, but I actually have several of my really old posts.  If you remember the days where posts would often get eaten, I would type them up in Word and then copy/paste.  I found a back-up CD of my old computer last year and saw them.  And my current one still has several.  I may have just found my daily when my youngest entered kindergarten in 2006.:hug:

Oh gosh, who could forget that damn post piggie?
Parent - - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-09-27 4:12 PM
I think that I started in 99 too and it certainly had been around before then. Agreed about owing a lot to RWOL and I'm sad to see it go also. One thing we all owe is that it started and ultimately pushed most us here.

Bummer, not that I participated much over there but would pop into the ultra forum from time to time. It seems it's going to break up the little community that is over there as most of them don't want to post to a FB group from what I've read.
Parent - - By mkh (Mr. Fashionista) Date 2017-09-26 8:30 AM Edited 2017-09-26 8:57 AM
I get that forums aren't very busy now and social media has taken over a lot of what they did, but I will say I hate trying to communicate or have a conversation on social media. It's not conducive at all.

of course, this is just when I earned a Moose Mug as well! Damn it.

No specific Marathon group, but 3 separate groups for three separate specific marathons?
Parent - - By gadget girl Date 2017-09-28 11:16 AM
completely agree on having a conversation/discussion on social media.  It seems to me that no one wants you to contradict them when they post something, they just want total agreement with their opinion.  If you want to sling some mud or disagree, this is the place.  : pbbt:
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-09-28 1:19 PM
Also on social media you know that friends of friends, or relatives, or friends of relatives/relatives of friends, may be watching and taking offense.

Yes!

I belong to a Next Door neighborhood group, and the back and forth there is surprisingly civil.  That, despite the fact it does get heated from time to time.  That's as far on social media I go, other than here.

>  It seems to me that no one wants you to contradict them when they post something, they just want total agreement ...

It's because of Mom. She's on FB. I can't call you a right-wing floozy because of that thing you said that I didn't like. Mom would grab me by my cyber ear.
Parent - By gadget girl Date 2017-10-03 12:12 PM
:laugh:  thank God for mom : pbbt:  Actually, I never post a single political opinion on FB.  I figure it can never help me.

and to complete the headshaking, the only way to comment on RW is to sign in using FB.

I think Zuckerberg may have purchased Rodale on the quiet...

In ascending order, my gratitude to the old RWOL for:

3. A bunch of imaginary friends.
2. A bunch of real life friends, some I see regularly and some too infrequently.
1. A spouse.

To quote a song that's been on my mind a lot lately:

"if it isn't making dollars,
then it isn't making sense."
- By Elcontador [us] Date 2017-09-26 1:53 PM
I started over there around 1997 or 1998, and got kicked off of that forum I'm guessing about 2010 after some dickhead compared me, a Jew, to Hitler, then tried to denied it, and I went off on him.  I got an e-mail inviting me to get back on that forum a few months later, and I responded, "thanks, but no thanks."
- By neustkg (Important) Date 2017-09-27 7:06 AM
I stopped going there after they changed the forums the first time and Runango formed.  I think I joined RWOL maybe in 2000?
- - By mutiger [us] Date 2017-09-27 7:44 AM
Has there been an influx?
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-09-27 10:17 AM
One so far on Women's.
- By Annie Date 2017-09-27 8:07 AM
That is sad. These forums, that started with RWOL, have been a part of my life for about 15 years (I'm guessing here).
- - By tahoeblue (spamkiller) Date 2017-09-27 11:03 AM
I saw a article a few months ago that Rodale was trying to sell themselves, in whole or in part.

I guess the publishing business is getting really bad - why should magazines be any different from newspapers?

I know that the RWOL forums are externally hosted and cost a small fortune to run, but I'd think that an online presence would be of a lot of value if you are trying to sell the company, or at least trying to sell Runner's World.
Parent - - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-09-27 12:30 PM
They can argue that they have an online presence with potentially 2 billion users, i.e. everyone on Facebook. And let the FB empire do the hosting and worry about slow forums and spammers.
Parent - - By tahoeblue (spamkiller) Date 2017-09-27 2:00 PM
That's a fair point, but i wonder if they will still try to moderate all of their forum pages on Facebook.  They must be paying tens of thousands a year to their moderators,
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-09-27 10:13 PM
I don't think they'll get any current RWOL Women's posters on FB. We moved back to runningahead.com for the dailies and there's also a private invitation-only FB group for the RWOL Women -- one of the regulars is having trouble with a stalking STBXDH and so they set up a private group where he can't read what she's posting.
Parent - - By ironjen Date 2017-09-28 7:09 AM Edited 2017-09-28 7:12 AM
I don't get RW magazine, but I do get 3 triathlete mags. One of them (LAVA) went all digital earlier this year without warning because of costs etc. I admit to being really pissed about it, because I PAID for a physical copy and I never remember to look at the online mag so I'm out the money I spent on my subscription. I will not be renewing it.
Parent - - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-09-28 1:20 PM
I also prefer a paper magazine.
Parent - - By neustkg (Important) Date 2017-10-03 8:26 AM
Similar things have happened to Ski magazine.  it has been gone for a few years.  Also Powder is gone (but that happened years ago).  Skiing is still being published and I used to be able to read it in several libraries locally, but they stopped carrying it, so I've been subscribing for the last 2 years.  Funny thing is that Ski and Skiing were both headquartered in Boulder.  I think Skiing and Ski merged a few years ago.
Parent - By neustkg (Important) Date 2017-10-04 7:10 PM
Meant to say Skiing is gone and Ski still exists

I'm sure it's not easy being on the opposite side of him in an argument, but the explication in those threads could be pretty damn thoughtful. Especially when his, um, adversary knew a thing or two.
Parent - By LDR (100 Mile Stud) [us] Date 2017-09-30 8:31 AM
Yes, and that is what I missed.  I disagreed with him quite often, and seldom had the courage to challenge him, but his responses to others made me think.

I remember an admin person over there that was very patient (with the problems with the forums going down and posts disappearing).  Can't remember his name.

Also a shoe expert that was on shoes and left (RW) after a few years.  Can't remember his name, either.

Bob "Wish" Wischnia is probably the shoe guy that you remember. He was awesome.

He's talking about Wish.

He worked for Runner's World and then for RunTex. I believe that he is now with Mizuno.

1998 to 2012 at Rodale, that's quite a lengthy tenure.

And looks like they had a layoff -- wouldn't surprise me given how horrendous the business climate was then.
