Up Topic General / Letters and Opinions / Parking: back in or nose in?
- - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-08-09 12:44 PM
Assuming there aren't any obnoxious signs saying "Head In Parking Only" and you are not skidding into the parking lot just as the bus arrives or the race starts (see, this is running related!), do you prefer to park backed into the spot or park head in and back out later? Why?
Parent - By IB [us] Date 2017-08-09 12:48 PM
Back in because it's gangster style.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-08-09 12:49 PM
I park in at least two spots so my Insight stays fresh.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-08-09 12:49 PM
Nose in.

nose in
Parent - - By sideshowbob Date 2017-08-09 1:23 PM
Not what you asked , but the city tried diagonal -- back in parking on the main drag to make more parking spaces . Many folks can't quite get the idea and often straddle two spaces; also this really slows the traffic flow.
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-08-09 3:56 PM
Diagonal back in? That is too complicated for an awful lot of people, I'd guess.
Parent - By kelly_v Date 2017-08-10 10:35 AM
they did that in a popular area of town here (actually along the popular paved running/biking path). About half the people comply and half don't. I don't frequent that area anymore but if I did I would be in the latter category

Diagonal parking was once common along main streets in the Midwest.  Our county seat still uses it around the court house.
Parent - - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-08-11 3:26 PM
We have it on the main drag.

Still is common in some parts of the Midwest, I think. Brookings (SD) has it. So does Rapid City.
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-08-11 4:11 PM
I remember it in Rapid City. It sucks.
Parent - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-08-11 4:25 PM
I still see it from PA to IL in rural towns. Actually, even some Philly suburbs still have it. No backing into those slots since you'd have to pull into oncoming traffic to back in, then pull into oncoming traffic to pull out. No need for "head in only" signs when you have diagonal slots.
Parent - - By PoopedColt Date 2017-08-11 4:54 PM
We have it on our street in front of city hall (my office). It is a PITA because everyone drives a big a** truck and you really can't see at all until you are out in the middle of the road
Parent - - By LDR (100 Mile Stud) [us] Date 2017-08-11 8:09 PM
*this*

big ass trucks should be banned
Parent - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-08-11 9:11 PM
I'd be fine if big ass trucks and suv's were banned. (no offense, noel.) It just would be nice to see when pulling out of a parking space or what is happening on the highway ahead.
Parent - By elmtree Date 2017-08-09 1:31 PM
Nose in for parking lots. Parallel pretty much everywhere else.
Parent - - By runnergirl4 (BJ Queen) Date 2017-08-09 1:35 PM Edited 2017-08-09 1:48 PM
Backing in is what I refer to as 'boy parking'. My dad used to always do that and I never was able to figure out why.

*i think it's a stupid way to park. My dad wasn't stupid but everyone else that does it is : pbbt:
Parent - - By Mookiethedog Date 2017-08-09 1:36 PM

I think it would be fun to go up to reverse parking morons (except for IB and your none stupid dad) and get fist bumps from them after they park.
Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-08-09 1:43 PM
I call it "fancy parking".

I'm not calling your dad a dick but I agree with mookie, it's usually a dick move to back into a parking spot.

The one exception is if it's at an event like a school concert and leaving the parking lot is going to be a total clusterf*ck. It's easier, and safer, to leave a parking spot in this situation if you are parked boy/fancy style.
Parent - - By Mookiethedog Date 2017-08-09 1:47 PM
With all due respect I like to reverse out and throw my right arm over the passenger seat as I turn my head like I'm some big steroid monkey wrestler and then if you're with a special lady (or man) you can make two moves at the same time.  (ps: you can all thank me later)
Parent - By tahoeblue (spamkiller) Date 2017-08-09 5:47 PM
Are you trying to tell us something here Mookie?
Parent - By PoopedColt Date 2017-08-09 1:58 PM
Hey! You typed faster than me. Stupid phone. :mutmad:
Parent - - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-08-09 4:28 PM
It's not a dick move nor stupid but might be fancy parking, and has utility as you mention and as I did about parking for work in a parking garage.

It might be kind of gender related so I can go with "boy parking" like rg4 mentioned. While the stereotype isn't as strong as it once was, most truck drivers of all kinds still are male. I learned to back into tight spots using side mirrors on a massive garbage truck with zero visibility in the rearview or turning around like Mookie described. And still use side mirrors instead of a rearview or turning my head around when backing a car into a spot. I doubt that many peeps who haven't driven a truck do that. In 20 years, I've never seen a woman use side mirrors in my parking garage although most everyone male and female backs in every day, probably for the reasons you and I have mentioned.
Parent - By IB [us] Date 2017-08-09 9:08 PM
Well said by that fine & distinguished gentleman from the other side of our fair country.

My situation was slightly similar when early in age I was on occasion driving a vehicle which I had to back into areas without the use of a rearview mirror or the sexy Mookie move.
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-08-10 9:34 AM
I use side mirrors for backing up, there's no rearview mirror in the Food Forward van and sometimes I have to back into a homeowner's driveway so we can load the van easily and then exit going forward.
Parent - - By Mookiethedog Date 2017-08-09 1:35 PM
People who back in are dick smacks...except for IB.  Just fkg park....it's not a 747
Parent - - By PoopedColt Date 2017-08-09 1:45 PM
 I agree. The only time I accept backing in are at large events where a lot of people are trying to leave the parking area at the same time. Other than that, nose in please.
Parent - By Mookiethedog Date 2017-08-09 1:49 PM
At large events I prefer to park sideways and then get out with a black lab and a white cane flashing my fake laminated permit

Parent - - By ironjen Date 2017-08-09 2:19 PM
Usually nose in. At A's dance studio I end up pulling through since it's a one way circled lot and about a billion times easier to pull out on that one side than back out because about 80% of the dance parents are cluelessfuckwits who only think of themselves and no one else :mutmad: Parking lots piss me off in general though because I was broadsided by someone who drove across 4 lanes of traffic and then tried to blame me for the accident :meh: I digress. In our garage, I park nose in, and J backs in. Right there, that should tell you a lot about our personalities :laugh:
Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2017-08-09 2:20 PM
Your husband sounds like a dick.: pbbt:
Parent - By ironjen Date 2017-08-09 2:26 PM
:laugh::laugh: Well sometimes he is. But in his defense, he grew up in a house with a driveway large enough for only one car (width wise) and his dad INSISTED everyone back in (as in, if I pulled in, it pissed him off). HE now, HE was/is a dick and that? That's putting it mildly.
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-08-09 3:58 PM
We all back into the driveway, because a) it's a long driveway and on a blind curve and backing out means the arse end of the car is halfway across the street before you can see what's coming down the hill, and b) if there's a fire and we're being evacuated I don't want to be slowed down by trying to back out.
Parent - By N70SAK Date 2017-08-09 3:21 PM
Depends on the vehicle and the conditions.

What pisses me off is cutting across lines in parking lots. :mutmad:
Parent - - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-08-09 4:00 PM
Usually nose in at things like races, group runs, grocery/other shopping and football tailgates for easy access to the trunk.

Everyday parking for work in the parking garage always is back-in. Easier and faster to pull out at the end of the day, plus easier to see the idiots blasting down the aisle.
Parent - - By Mookiethedog Date 2017-08-09 4:45 PM
Sometimes pulling out isn't always a guaranteed way to be safe
Parent - - By jaszflamus (I like wool!) Date 2017-08-09 4:49 PM Edited 2017-08-09 4:52 PM
Safer than backing out especially if you're between two SUVs or pickup trucks in which case you kind of have to shut your eyes backing out slowly and pray.

eta: either way it's best to do it slowly of course. Pulling out at least gives you a quicker view of someone blasting down the aisle.
Parent - - By Mookiethedog Date 2017-08-09 5:14 PM
Sorry I thought we were talking about sex...or maybe you were too?  I know what you mean about blasting down an aisle

I almost always back in, for several reasons. One, I like the practice that it gives me; it makes me a better driver and more adept at gauging angles and distances. Two, one of my wife's uncles once told me that he always backs in because there is no place where he would rather take more time leaving than arriving. So I like the freedom to just start my car and drive out, no worries.
Parent - By IB [us] Date 2017-08-09 9:02 PM
Fellow dick fist bump! Which is better than a fellow fist dick bump.  :wtf:  Sorry I just read that jasz/Mookie exchange.

Your wife's uncle is/was a wise man!

Nope. Total dick.
Parent - By gadget girl Date 2017-08-10 12:02 PM
I notice that in Hawaii everyone backs in -- it's a state wide epidemic.  Maybe they want to make sure they are in the position to race to the beach and catch a good wave?

I park nose in because I am a shitty woman driver
Parent - - By LDR (100 Mile Stud) [us] Date 2017-08-10 12:05 PM
Nose in, usually.

I'm assuming we're not talking parallel parking here...
Parent - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-08-11 3:27 PM
You're right. Not parallel parking.

Nose in unless there are good reasons to back in (leaving crowded parking lot for example).
- - By brneydrnnr (barney cougar) [us] Date 2017-08-10 9:16 AM
Back in -
1) it's easier to leave when you're in a crowded place
2) sometimes, you can pull through a spot so that while you're technically "backed in" you went in nose first
3) if you work in telecommunications - it's one thing techs are advised to do in almost all situations. You can always tell a company parking lot that has a lot of field technicians because 90% of the cars in the parking lot will be backed in
4)ladies who can back into a spot are hotter
Parent - - By Arimathea [us] Date 2017-08-10 9:36 AM
In case the tech has to leave in a hurry with a ticked off person chasing him/her?
Parent - By brneydrnnr (barney cougar) [us] Date 2017-08-10 10:23 AM
actually I think it's for safety for leaving. since most of them are driving trucks or vans, it's a lot easier to leave if you can see what's coming instead of looking in rearview & side mirrors for obstacles/traffic.
