I don't see the big deal there. Hispanohablantes say, "de nada" which translates to "it's nothing", or "no hay problema" (take a wild guess what that translates to). "No problem" has been the Caribbean version of "your welcome" as long as anyone can remember.

the bleak and soulless suburban conformity of Schaumburg, IL, its empty consumerist non-culture allowing him to realize in record time that all human pursuits are cold, joyless, and devoid of any substantive purpose or integrity.

I've been to Schaumburg and that pretty much sums it up.

Are you proclaiming the deliciousness of a chain restaurant? What is going on? Are you sick? How do you feel about cars and 80's nostalgia?
Parent - - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2012-09-19 1:26 PM
It's a local chain. Does that make a difference?
Parent - By The Beard (is wearing Arm Panties) [us] Date 2012-10-23 9:09 AM Edited 2012-10-23 9:37 AM
On the way back from the Purdue game we stopped at the Legoland in Schaumburg and ate at Portillo's. I also stopped at a Volvo/Fisker dealer (it was Sunday thankfully so I didn't have to talk to a salesperson that would know in 3 seconds I couldn't afford anything on the lot). They had three Karmas parked outside. DROOOOOOL.

This past weekend I saw a Tesla Model S parked outside of my workplace. In pictures it looks great but in person it was majorly disappointing. It looked like a Chinese knock off of a Jaguar with a bit of Mazda 6 thrown in. The interior was terrible (NOTE: that is an image from google, I'm not so big of a creeper that I take pictures of the inside of people's cars). It has a large iPad like touchscreen that looks like something from a poorly "pimped" car. The steering wheel looked really cheap and the rest was mediocre at best. You could tell that they cut a lot of corners on materials and fit and finish. It looked sub par for a $30k car, let alone one that starts at $50k and ranges up to $100k depending on battery size.

Parent - By elmtree Date 2012-09-19 7:52 PM
Fancy!

We have a Panera in the city that is a Community Cares Panera (or whatever they're called).  You pay what you can (which might be nothing), the regular price, or more.  The menu has the regular prices on it, but your cost is a "suggested donation."  I've eaten there twice, and both times I paid the regular price and then tossed some extra on there.  If your tab is, say, $8.19, they ask if you want to round it up to $9.  I think it's been fairly successful, and both times, I saw people who were taking advantage of a good meal while being treated just like a "normal" person.  The last time I was there, a table of men was having a discussion about where they'd looked for jobs this week, and were exchanging contact info for other jobs while having lunch.  It was pretty neat.

The cutesy spelling is the first sign of  wrongness. The $44 ($32 for those under 5) manicure/pedicure adds ridiculousness to the equation . The "Sweet Endings" offered after every visit sends the place well past wrong and into FUCKINGCREEPYASHELL territory.

Man tries to rob people in line for LeBron James sneakers, is shot and killed.

People waiting overnight in line for $180 denim basketball shoes are targeted by armed robber. Someone in line pulls his own gun, shoots and kills the robber.

Here's a quote from someone that was in the line...
"I didn't even expect him to come up here, thinking it was that sweet. Thinking it's that candy land like that. He wanted to pickpocket everybody. But people out here, they weren't going for none of that."

"Beachtoweling" AKA hotdesking for the local office of a Fortune 500 company. Come in and choose (or find) your location for the day, which you cannot reserve in advance. Leave your personal possessions in a locker. Clear everything off the workstation at the end of the day because you'll likely be sitting somewhere else tomorrow. No more private offices. No more personal spaces. No trash cans under the desks because the office is supposed to be paper free (works so well when the employee has a cold and needs to throw out tissues). No physical phones, a "softphone" is installed on the laptop, everyone must take their laptops home each evening and wears a headset to talk on the phone during the day.

Society is indeed in decline.

Parent - - By Arimathea [us] Date 2018-04-18 11:53 PM
It is. And the PTB are now telling the workers that "I don't like the new office" and "the commute is horrible" are not good enough reasons to work from home. We've already started working out a WFH roster so there's always someone in the office but most of us get a turn at working remotely.

They are looking for collaboration and creativity and purportedly trying to foster a "vibrant", "energized" environment. This is not a creative organization. This is a service company and how can one provide good customer service if one cannot hear the customer on the telephone because of the noise in the office?
Parent - - By Tommeke Date 2018-04-19 4:42 AM
Clearly you need to keep your momentum going on the verticals and accelerate innovation.
This can only be done by breaking the barriers of the information silos and have a truly integrated workforce.
Oh, and they calculated that now they only need 3000 sq ft to host all of you instead of 2500 sq ft, saving 300$ on the rent and utilities

One of the reasons I left an employer a couple of years ago, was the fact they were getting rid of offices and everyone was put into a "collaborative, open office format".  :roll:I am in the banking industry, so this seemed very inappropriate given privacy laws which govern how we monitor client information.  Additionally, I am one of the LOUDEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD, so everyone would have hated being near me.

I thought you meant the practice of people on vacation at cheap "all-in" hotels to setup their towels on chairs by the pool (the good spots) at 7-8 am in the morning as to "reserve" their spot for the rest of the day. Like they would do the same at your office. Just come early, setup your desk and then it looks "taken" so you have your spot.

Here are some ridiculous clips showing the practice (completely SFW ):

that is very similar to my office now. The only difference is we call it hoteling - I've never heard beachtoweling - and it is only for those who are not here regularly (mostly sales type people). I've wondered what they are supposed to do with basic personal stuff you would want to have at your desk because even though they are in and out for meetings, most are at a desk 3-4 days out of the week. The rest of us do have static desks although we are all changing to softphones with headsets.

And please remember, all that snow represents heat that evaporated water somewhere else , that was moved a great distance and then dumped.

I'm no scientist, but I think you just gave a pretty decent description of one effect of climate change the deniers I know might actually understand.

I think the big picture is just "Planet gets Hotter -> more instability".

Look at the Polar vortexes that send all that cold weather to the US (and Europe).
North Pole heats up, Polar vortexes weakens, cold weather escapes to the South.

Fired former FBI director writes a book about POTUS which includes info about the president's hand size, skin color and nonprofessional info that diminishes said author's gravitas and credibility .:cry::sad:
